First Blog

The first reading about the Sutton Pie Safe really bugged me because it left me questioning and wondering what the meaning of it was supposed to be. I thought that the story was all about pride because of the father being the center of attention. When the Judge's wife came in her Buick he wanted to show her that they were proud to be rednecks, and this is why he killed the snake. Then he got angry that she was wanting to take the only thing of value that the family possessed and that was a wedding gift from the dad's parents so he got even more pissed off and this is why he took the mouse out of the snake's stomach and showed it to the boy. Finally, when he said to the boy "...think about that the next time you want something.", I saw this to be a comment on how there might be obstacles that in a way gross us out on our way to reaching our goals, but we have to put them under our feet in order to achieve what we want.

The second reading about Every Little Hurricane expressed the sad truth of the poverty that many Native Americans across the nation are experiencing. I thought that the author's metaphors about all of the storms in our lives was very expressive and made me think of all the storms that have happened in my life that have affected the people around me. The author shows an example of how Native Americans have been experiencing troubles for so long that these storms (people dying, fights, shootings, stabbings) have turned "generic" with little number of people caring, even though they affect so many. The hurricane that passed in his life during the winter of 1976 showed how tough times were. His examples included his uncles fighting affecting everyone at the party, everyone getting drunk to escape from their tough times, his parents passed out on the bed, his aunt falling down the stairs, people getting thrown out into the snow, people falling in the snow, people f***ing in the snow, and finally, when it was all over "...all the Indians, the eternal survivors, gathered to count their losses."

I can see how your interpretation of the Sutton Pie Safe works. Another potential meaning that we talked about in our class was that the dad and the Judge's wife had an affair at one point. It might have ended with him hurting her. She had a lot of money and tried to get back at him by coming to his house and buying something that was important to him.
